Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: Nolan Countdown. Each week in the lead up to Christopher Nolan's latest film, Tenet, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through Christopher Nolan's full filmography in chronological order, starting from his humble beginnings making "budget" films like Following and Memento, all the way to his most recent days making mega-blockbusters like his Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. This time, Jay Habib has actually seen these films (quite a few of them, quite a few times actually), but there will be fresh takes, crazy theories, and deep conversations about one of the most interesting auteur filmmakers of this generation all along the way. Join us each week!
On the final part of the Nolan Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit Christopher Nolan's most recent film, 2017's war drama, Dunkirk. Taking place across three different perspectives - land, sea, and air - Dunkirk retells the story of the evacuation of Dunkirk during World War II in May and June of 1940. With the Allied forces of Great Britain and France on the run as the Germans march across France, they eventually reach the end of the road at Dunkirk. With their homes in sight but the English Channel between them, the English must attempt a daring evacuation of their troops, or face decimation at the hands of the Nazis. As always, it wouldn't be a Nolan movie without a time twist, and Dunkirk follows Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) and several other soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk for the week leading up to the evacuation; Mr. Dawson (Mark Rylance), Peter (Tom Glynn-Carney), and George (Barry Keoghan) in the English Channel for the day of the evacuation; and Farrier (Tom Hardy) and Collins (Jack Lowden) for the hour of the evacuation. What resulted was a film that many called a technical triumph of the highest order at the time it released, but does it hold up? And is there more to it than it just being a technical masterpiece? The countdown trio discuss all these topics and more in their final episode ahead of the release of Tenet this August (for now).
