007 Countdown Part 5 - License to Kill
Sunday Aug 22, 2021
Sunday Aug 22, 2021
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest Countdown miniseries: the 007 Countdown. This time, in honor of the upcoming release of the 25th film in the franchise, NO TIME TO DIE, Scott, Scott, and Jay will be revisiting an abridged selection of 007 films to see how James Bond has evolved across decades, storylines, directors, and actors. Starting with the legendary performances of Sean Connery in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and GOLDFINGER and ending with the full retinue of Daniel Craig's performances across the last decade and a half, the countdown crew will give their thoughts on 10 different Bond films. Join us each week as we dissect a different Bond film!
On the fifth episode of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay fast forward to the 16th film in the franchise and a new take on Bond with Timothy Dalton's second and final outing as the British secret agent, in 1989's LICENSE TO KILL. One of many directed by John Glen, LICENSE TO KILL starts with Dalton's Bond celebrating long-time friend and CIA operative, Felix Leiter's (David Hedison) wedding in Key West, FL. The wedding processional is disrupted by the news that cartel kingpin Franz Sanchez (Robert Davi) is nearby, and Leiter and Bond assist DEA agents in capturing him. All is not well, however, as Leiter and Bond become targets of Sanchez and his operation when the former escapes from DEA custody just hours after his capture. Leiter's newlywed wife is murdered and he himself is mauled to within an inch of his life after being fed to a shark. Reeling from the attempt on one of his closest friend's life, Bond goes on a killing spree that sees him go rogue from MI6 and takes him from Key West to Panama in the hunt for those responsible for Leiter's condition. The countdown crew are on hand to give their thoughts on Dalton's take on Bond, whether the rogue-agent-revenge-story works well, and if the Bond girls ever get any better.

On the fourth episode of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay skip one movie to the 10th film in the Bond franchise and Roger Moore's third with 1977's THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. The film picks up with Moore's Bond assigned to investigate the disappearance of two nuclear submarines, one British and one Soviet. He is in competition with KGB agent Triple X, Anya Asamova (Barbara Bach) in Egypt, as they each try to recover the microfilm plans for an advanced submarine tracking system for their own nations. However, the two traditional rivals are forced to team up when the iconic henchman Jaws (Richard Kiel) shows up to steal the plans, returning them to the mastermind of the nuclear submarine theft, Karl Stromberg (Curt Jürgens). As usual, Bond (and Asamova) must race agains the clock to foil Stromberg's plans, and the countdown crew are on hand to give their thoughts on this entry in the Bond franchise, more specifically whether Moore has continued to settle into the Bond character, the cast of supporting characters, and whether this story might be a bit easier to follow than some previous entries in the franchise.

007 Countdown Part 2 - Goldfinger

Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest Countdown miniseries: the 007 Countdown. This time, in honor of the upcoming release of the 25th film in the franchise, NO TIME TO DIE, Scott, Scott, and Jay will be revisiting an abridged selection of 007 films to see how James Bond has evolved across decades, storylines, directors, and actors. Join us each week as we dissect a different Bond film!
On the second episode of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit the follow-up to last week's film and the third movie in the Bond franchise, GOLDFINGER. The film opens with Sean Connery's Bond successfully completing a mission that finds him bombing a drug lab in Latin America. After completing his mission, he flies to Miami for a short holiday, only to be spoiled with the assignment of observing bullion dealer, Gert Fröbe's Auric Goldfinger, who is vacationing at the same hotel. It doesn't take Bond long to discover some of Goldfinger's less illicit, but still shady dealings, cheating at a high-stakes game of gin rummy via his employee, Jill Masterson (Shirley Eaton). Bond foils Goldfinger's cheating and seduces Jill, only to be knocked unconscious in his room by Goldfinger's manservant, Oddjob (Harold Sakata). When Bond wakes up, he finds Jill dead, covered from head-to-toe in gold paint. Bond returns to England, but his Goldfinger assignment doesn't end there, as he is tasked with uncovering how Goldfinger is able to transport large caches of gold across international borders and thereby exploiting different gold prices in foreign markets. This assignment takes Bond to Switzerland and finally back to the U.S. to Kentucky, on a collision course with the now-infamous Fort Knox "heist" that Goldfinger aims to accomplish. The countdown crew give their thoughts on whether GOLDFINGER builds on the formula established in its predecessors, whether Connery continues to live up to the Bond archetype, and whether this film indicates an upward trajectory for the Bond franchise overall.

On the first episode of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay venture all the way back to 1963 for the sophomore film in the franchise and the one that is known for establishing the Bond formula, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. Directed by Terence Young in his second outing, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE finds Sean Connery's James Bond shortly after his successful mission in Jamaica, foiling the plans of and slaying SPECTRE member, Dr. No. SPECTRE want their revenge on Bond, and so they set a trap for him in Istanbul using an unwitting Tatiana Romanova (Daniela Bianci) to lure Bond in for specially trained Irish SPECTRE assassin, Donald "Red" Grant (Robert Shaw), to murder him. Once in Istanbul, things don't go as planned for either Bond or SPECTRE, as a game of cat and mouse leads ultimately to a famous showdown on the Orient Express.
