Fincher Countdown Part 7 - The Social Network
Sunday Oct 04, 2020
Sunday Oct 04, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: the Fincher Countdown. Each week in the lead up to David Fincher's latest film, Mank, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through most* of David Fincher's filmography in chronological order, starting from his non-franchise debut, the neo-noir psychological detective thriller, SEVEN, leading all the way to 2014's GONE GIRL. Join us each week as we talk about a different Fincher film!
On Part 7 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit David Fincher's team-up with acclaimed writer, Aaron Sorkin, in the 2010 biographical drama, THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Starring Jesse Eisenberg as real-life Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, THE SOCIAL NETWORK weaves the tale the social media platform's nascent days, recreating Zuckerberg's times at Harvard in the days leading to Facebook's conception, as well as its days as a developing exclusive platform for elite colleges, all interwoven with modern-day courtroom drama scenes in depositions and board rooms as both Zuckerberg's former best friend, Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), and his fellow Harvard students, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (Armie Hammer and Armie Hammer), sue him over various allegations of unfair stock dilution and IP theft respectively. THE SOCIAL NETWORK is not simply the tale of the founding of the empire that is now Facebook, it also doubles as an intimate examination of Zuckerberg, and the film does not always paint one of the now-wealthiest men in the world in the kindest of lights, a light that may have been justified after Zuckerberg's near-pariah status over the last few years. Regardless, the countdown trio give their thoughts on whether the sumptuous combo of Fincher and Sorkin plays out effectively on the big screen, which of the performances is their favorites, and what Sorkin and Fincher's portrayal of Zuckerberg is and whether it's fair.

Fincher Countdown Part 6 - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Sunday Sep 27, 2020
Sunday Sep 27, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: the Fincher Countdown. Each week in the lead up to David Fincher's latest film, Mank, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through most* of David Fincher's filmography in chronological order, starting from his non-franchise debut, the neo-noir psychological detective thriller, SEVEN, leading all the way to 2014's GONE GIRL. Join us each week as we talk about a different Fincher film!
On Part 6 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit what may arguably Fincher's furthest afield film, at least from his normal standards, that is of course the fantasy romantic drama, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON. Starring Brad Pitt as a man aging in reverse and born on the eve of the end of World War I, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON is an epic life-spanning tale exploring the simple concept of what it would be like if you lived your life's milestones in reverse. What if you looked the part of an aging veteran of life's trials and tribulations, but had in fact not weathered any of them? What if you arrived in your 20s with 50-60 years of life experience under your belt? What would it feel like to form close relationships with someone (see: Cate Blanchett's Daisy) who you would watch grow old as you stay young and even become a child? Fincher's sixth non-franchise outing tries to posit an answer to all those questions, all the while exploring (or at least trying to explore) complex emotional themes wrapped up in human life and the passage of time. The countdown trio give their thoughts on whether Fincher is successfully tells his epic story, whether the performances were worth their salt (particularly in the case of the film's two Oscar nominees, Pitt and Taraji P. Henson), and whether the film effectively explores its central themes.

Fincher Countdown Part 5 - Zodiac
Sunday Sep 20, 2020
Sunday Sep 20, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: the Fincher Countdown. Each week in the lead up to David Fincher's latest film, Mank, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through most* of David Fincher's filmography in chronological order, starting from his non-franchise debut, the neo-noir psychological detective thriller, SEVEN, leading all the way to 2014's GONE GIRL. Join us each week as we talk about a different Fincher film!
On Part 5 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay try to crack one of the most famous unsolved serial killer cases of all time in David Fincher's 2007 historically fictionalized true crime-esque mystery thriller, ZODIAC. Based on the hunt for the titular serial killer, who is believed to have murdered double-digit people up and down the California coast in the second half of the 20th century, ZODIAC follows the story of Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), a San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist in the late 60s and early 70s, who becomes obsessed with the Zodiac murders and the puzzles the killer anonymously sent to local newspapers. Graysmith's obsession is shared by the Chronicle's crime reporter Paul Avery (a pre-Iron Man Robert Downey Jr.), who pesters and prods the police's investigation, led by Inspector David Toschi (a pre-Hulk Mark Ruffalo). The police and the Chronicle butt heads on several occasions over the course of the investigation, as Fincher weaves an immensely engrossing tale filled with suspense and tension, even in the unlikeliest of places, as Graysmith's attempts to hunt down the Zodiac span more than a decade, two marriages, and likely several friendships. The countdown trio give their thoughts on one of the true crime genre's original critical successes, its all-star ensemble cast, and whether the film justifies its lengthy runtime.

Fincher Countdown Part 4 - Panic Room
Sunday Sep 13, 2020
Sunday Sep 13, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: the Fincher Countdown. Each week in the lead up to David Fincher's latest film, Mank, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through most* of David Fincher's filmography in chronological order, starting from his non-franchise debut, the neo-noir psychological detective thriller, SEVEN, leading all the way to 2014's GONE GIRL. Join us each week as we talk about a different Fincher film!
On Part 4 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay take a look back at what at least one Scott labels as David Fincher's most underrated film: the home invasion thriller starring Jodie Foster, PANIC ROOM. PANIC ROOM follows the lives of a recently separated mother, Meg (Foster), and her daughter, Sarah (Kristen Stewart), on the first evening in their newly purchased Upper West Side brownstone in Manhattan, when their new home is invaded by a trio of burglars, intent on finding millions of dollars in the floor safe of the luxurious apartment's panic room. The catch? Meg and Sarah are able to securely lock themselves in their new home's panic room, unknowingly with the floor safe, before the intruders are able to wrangle them. Unfortunately, the panic room's hardline phone had not yet been connected, and so the mother-daughter pair have no way of alerting the outside world to their dire situation. Forced to survive the night, as the intruders become progressively more agitated and inventive in trying to force them out, Meg and Sarah are forced to make some hard decisions, as their burglar counterparts have to deal with rising tensions of their own to avoid the theft falling apart. The countdown trio give their thoughts on Foster's and the supporting cast's performances, the film's success as a purely genre exercise, and whether this put Fincher back on track after two relative box office failures.

Fincher Countdown Part 3 - Fight Club
Sunday Sep 06, 2020
Sunday Sep 06, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: the Fincher Countdown. Each week in the lead up to David Fincher's latest film, Mank, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through most* of David Fincher's filmography in chronological order, starting from his non-franchise debut, the neo-noir psychological detective thriller, SEVEN, leading all the way to 2014's GONE GIRL. Join us each week as we talk about a different Fincher film!
On Part 3 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay take a look back at the film in David Fincher's catalog that has truly achieved "cult" status: his 1999 twisty psychological thriller, FIGHT CLUB. Best known for its infamous first rule and its archetypal toxic male, Tyler Durden, FIGHT CLUB stars Edward Norton as the unnamed insomniac narrator, who, after becoming disillusioned with the emasculating materialistic consumerism of his existence starts an underground fight club for men to get in touch with their emotions by beating each other to a pulp. Norton's narrator does this alongside Brad Pitt's Durden, a soap salesman who he meets on a business trip and who he makes fast friends with. It doesn't take long for Durden to show his true colors as a social anarchist, whose ambitions grow, forming a cult-like following of men to join a movement called Project Mayhem, a movement that is set on doing just what its title describes. All the while, Norton's narrator has to contend with his complicated relationship with Helena Bonham Carter's Marla, as well as his deteriorating psychological state. The countdown trio give their thoughts on the performances, this film's role in an ongoing conversation about toxic masculinity, and whether it's worthy of its now-cult status in the world of pop culture.
