Friday Sep 04, 2020
Friday Sep 04, 2020
Welcome everyone to an all new episode of Some Like It Scott! On this week's episode, the two Scotts take time at the start of the podcast to talk about two emotional subjects, one positive and one negative, the first being the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman from Stage IV colon cancer at the young age of 43, and the second being that the two Scotts both returned to the theater this past weekend to see a film at least one Scott never thought would be released: Josh Boone's The New Mutants. After giving their thoughts on this long-gestating horror-lite X-Men movie, they turn their attention to a brief round of casting news, including new roles for Paul Mescal and Ethan Hawke. See time codes below:
2:49 - Chadwick Boseman, dead at 43
13:02 - Return to theaters
22:15 - The New Mutants
54:14 - Paul Mescal cast in Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut

Fincher Countdown Part 2 - The Game
Sunday Aug 30, 2020
Sunday Aug 30, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: the Fincher Countdown. Each week in the lead up to David Fincher's latest film, Mank, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through most* of David Fincher's filmography in chronological order, starting from his non-franchise debut, the neo-noir psychological detective thriller, SEVEN, leading all the way to 2014's GONE GIRL. Join us each week as we talk about a different Fincher film!
On Part 2 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay take a look back at one of the films in this countdown series that none of them have seen: David Fincher's follow-up in the thriller genre, THE GAME. THE GAME follows Michael Douglas's Nicholas van Orton, an ultra-wealthy investment banker, who is haunted by his father's suicide when he was a child and who is a loner as a result of his estranged relationship with his ex-wife, as well as his aloof brother, Conrad (Sean Penn). On Nicholas's 48th birthday, (not so) coincidentally the same birthday his father committed suicide on, Conrad presents his brother with a gift voucher, which serves as a free referral to a company, Consumer Recreation Services (CRS), that offers one service: a game. It is not at all clear what exactly the game is, but Conrad assures his brother that it'll change his life, as it has changed his own, and Nicholas begrudgingly gives it a shot. It quickly becomes clear that whatever the game is, it's not as innocent or free-spirited as Conrad had made it seem at the time, and soon enough, Nicholas is swept into the machinations of CRS and their game, trying to find his way to the bottom of the many mysteries, before he pays the price in his own life. The countdown trio give their thoughts on what is essentially Fincher's sophomore outing, and whether the successes he found in SEVEN are carried forward in his second twisty tale.

Fincher Countdown Part 1 - Seven
Sunday Aug 23, 2020
Sunday Aug 23, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: the Fincher Countdown. Each week in the lead up to David Fincher's latest film, Mank, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through most* of David Fincher's filmography in chronological order, starting from his non-franchise debut, the neo-noir psychological detective thriller, SEVEN, leading all the way to 2014's GONE GIRL. Join us each week as we talk about a different Fincher film!
On Part 1 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit the film catapulted David Fincher into the Hollywood limelight: the Morgan Freeman-led, Brad Pitt-supporting neo-noir psychological detective thriller, SEVEN. Set in a crime-ridden New York City in the final week of Detective William Somerset's (Morgan Freeman) career, the aging detective is dispatched to the scene of a gruesome homicide-by-overeating. Saddled with a hothead new partner, David Mills (Brad Pitt), the hunt for a murderer quickly becomes a hunt for a serial killer, as several more bodies pop up, all themed around the concept of the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, pride, envy, and wrath. As Somerset puts his retirement on hold to crack this final case, he and Mills make for an interesting pair, and the former ultimately befriends the latter's wife (Gwyneth Paltrow), who confides in him a secret she's unsure whether to confess to her husband. Running short on time before their serial killer completes his seven murders, Somerset and Mills rush to chase down leads and find their suspect before the body count piles up. The countdown trio give their thoughts on Fincher's non-franchise debut, and whether his gritty, dark, and raw technique effectively juggles all the elements of a film as complex and twisty as Seven, as well as the quality of the performances from Freeman, Pitt, Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey.

Nolan Countdown Part 10 - Dunkirk
Sunday Jul 12, 2020
Sunday Jul 12, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: Nolan Countdown. Each week in the lead up to Christopher Nolan's latest film, Tenet, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through Christopher Nolan's full filmography in chronological order, starting from his humble beginnings making "budget" films like Following and Memento, all the way to his most recent days making mega-blockbusters like his Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. This time, Jay Habib has actually seen these films (quite a few of them, quite a few times actually), but there will be fresh takes, crazy theories, and deep conversations about one of the most interesting auteur filmmakers of this generation all along the way. Join us each week!
On the final part of the Nolan Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit Christopher Nolan's most recent film, 2017's war drama, Dunkirk. Taking place across three different perspectives - land, sea, and air - Dunkirk retells the story of the evacuation of Dunkirk during World War II in May and June of 1940. With the Allied forces of Great Britain and France on the run as the Germans march across France, they eventually reach the end of the road at Dunkirk. With their homes in sight but the English Channel between them, the English must attempt a daring evacuation of their troops, or face decimation at the hands of the Nazis. As always, it wouldn't be a Nolan movie without a time twist, and Dunkirk follows Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) and several other soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk for the week leading up to the evacuation; Mr. Dawson (Mark Rylance), Peter (Tom Glynn-Carney), and George (Barry Keoghan) in the English Channel for the day of the evacuation; and Farrier (Tom Hardy) and Collins (Jack Lowden) for the hour of the evacuation. What resulted was a film that many called a technical triumph of the highest order at the time it released, but does it hold up? And is there more to it than it just being a technical masterpiece? The countdown trio discuss all these topics and more in their final episode ahead of the release of Tenet this August (for now).
