Nolan Countdown Part 4 - Batman Begins
Sunday May 31, 2020
Sunday May 31, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: Nolan Countdown. Each week in the lead up to Christopher Nolan's latest film, Tenet, the two Scotts and countdown special guest, Jay Habib, will be working their way through Christopher Nolan's full filmography in chronological order, starting from his humble beginnings making "budget" films like Following and Memento, all the way to his most recent days making mega-blockbusters like his Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. This time, Jay Habib has actually seen these films (quite a few of them, quite a few times actually), but there will be fresh takes, crazy theories, and deep conversations about one of the most interesting auteur filmmakers of this generation all along the way. Join us each week!
On part 4 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit the first entry in what would eventually become Christopher Nolan's trilogy of Batman films: the 2005 superhero film Batman Begins. Batman Begins at the time was a fresh take on the origin story of Bruce Wayne, Gotham's famous caped crusader, portrayed by Christian Bale, as he goes on a 7-year odyssey to find himself and his calling, 14 years after the double-murder of his parents by a street thug named Joe Cool in a back alley of Gotham. Bruce's odyssey takes him to the far reaches of the mountains of Bhutan in South Asia, where he finds and trains with the mysterious organization called The League of Shadows, only to question and rebel against their plan to destroy Gotham, which has become too corrupt to save by their measure. The remainder of Batman Begins sees Bruce return to his hometown of Gotham and to his butler, Alfred, played by Micheal Caine, and resolves himself to fighting mafia kingpin, Carmine Falcone, played by Tom Wilkinson, using his newly learned tactics and trainings, a brand new vigilante identity, and some sweet new tools, thanks to Wayne Enterprises's R&D division and Morgan Freeman's Lucius Fox. Batman won't be able to take down Falcone, as well as new-on-the-scene fear-mongerer, Scarecrow, played by Cillian Murphy, alone, and will require the help of Alfred; Fox; his childhood friend and love interest, Rachel Dawes, played by Katie Holmes; and Gary Oldman's James Gordon, one of the few incorruptible Gotham City police officers. The countdown trio give their thoughts on how well Nolan's initial take on Batman holds up, the evolving technical aspects of his filmmaking, and whether the performances and the set pieces of Batman Begins continue to improve.

Nolan Countdown Part 3 - Insomnia

Sunday May 24, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: Nolan Countdown.
On part 3 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit what some people consider to be one of the most mainstream or "straightforward" films in Nolan's oeuvre (maybe a final proof-point to show the major film studios that they can trust him with hundreds of millions of dollars and a high-value IP, like say Batman): Insomnia, the 2002 psychological detective thriller American remake of a 1997 Norwegian film. Nolan has the significant talent of Oscar-winning Al Pacino, Oscar-winning Robin Williams, and Oscar-winning Hilary Swank at his disposal, and makes use of them respectively as Will Dormer, a troubled veteran LAPD detective on loan to a small fishing town called Nightmute, Alaska to help solve the murder of a local teen; Walter Finch, a reclusive, local Alaskan writer who the murdered teen had a secret relationship with; and Ellie Burr, a youthful, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed local detective who idolizes Pacino's Dormer. As with all Nolan films, however, there's a catch, as Dormer slowly sinks into delirium due to the insomnia that he suffers while in Nightmute, thanks to the perpetual daylight there during the summer, as well as the guilt he suffers from an event that happens early on in the movie. Wrestling with both his sanity, his guilt over past actions, and the murderer of a dead teenage girl, Nolan sends Pacino's Dormer on a conflicted manhunt of Williams's Finch that sees Nolan experiment with action set pieces for the first time, while still exploring darker themes of morality and the blurred line of right and wrong. The countdown trio give their thoughts on the central trio of performances, how successful Nolan's first true action set pieces were, and whether the technical aspects of this film work as effectively as they might have in his previous film.

Nolan Countdown Part 2 - Memento
Sunday May 17, 2020
Sunday May 17, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: Nolan Countdown.
On part 2 of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit (or in one Scott's case, visit for the first time) the film that put Christopher Nolan well and truly on the map as a director: Memento. Released two years after his debut outing, Memento shows Nolan in a slightly more refined light, telling the neo-noir psychological thriller story of Guy Pearce's Leonard, a man who has anterograde amnesia (a.k.a., short-term memory loss) and is unable to form any new memories after the traumatic head injury he received while trying to fend off several home intruders, who ultimately rape and murder his wife. After the loss of his wife and his short-term memory, Leonard devotes his life to finding the man responsible, the ambiguous "John G", and tracks his own progress by leaving reminders and notes to himself in the form of tattoos and scraps of paper. Memento is more than just your run-of-the-mill psychological thriller though, as Nolan chooses to tell the story in the form of two dueling narratives: a black-and-white one that progresses forward through time from the start of the film and one in color that moves backward from its end, ultimately meeting in the middle for a well and truly grand finale. The countdown trio give their detailed thoughts on Guy Pearce's lead performance, the morally ambiguous characters Nolan crafts, and how well Nolan's storytelling and themes actually hold up when all is said and done.

Nolan Countdown Part 1 - Following
Sunday May 10, 2020
Sunday May 10, 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's latest limited series: Nolan Countdown.
On the first part of the countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay generate a first impression of the oft overlooked first film from Christopher Nolan: Following. Shot in black-and-white and made on the most shoestrings of budgets for a meager $6,000, Christopher Nolan made his mark on the festival scene in 1998 with his first pass at a neo-noir crime drama (it's possible that he might have made another a few years later). Split across several different timelines, Following follows the nameless "Young Man" (Jeremy Theobald) as he sinks into a life of petty crime after meeting a serial burglar, named Cobb (Alex Haw). As he falls deeper into the lifestyle, Following shows an early Nolan tinkering with and refining his now-famous bag of tricks in a story full of twists and turns and then even more turns, all in a tight 69 minutes. The countdown trio give their thoughts on Nolan's first outing as director, the story, the characters, the performances, and the twists, and talk about how Following sets the stage in interesting (and on-the-nose) ways for what Nolan will do in the future.
