Anderson Countdown Part 7 - Moonrise Kingdom

Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's newest Countdown miniseries: the Wes Anderson Countdown. To honor one of the great still-working indie writer-director auteurs, who's next film ASTEROID CITY comes out later this year, Scott, Scott, and Jay will be watching all 10 of the American filmmakers' works to-date, from his origins with the '90s heist-comedy BOTTLE ROCKET, all the way to his latest feature, 2021's star-studded anthology drama THE FRENCH DISPATCH. Join us each week over the next 10 weeks as we progress through Anderson's full oeuvre in the buildup to ASTEROID CITY!

 

On part 7 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit MOONRISE KINGDOM, Wes Anderson’s return to the coming-of-age comedy-drama. Directed by Anderson and co-written with Wes regular, Roman Coppola, MOONRISE KINGDOM tells the story of two disaffected, pre-teen, star-crossed lovers on the small New England island called New Penzance. Sam Shakusky (Jared Gilman) is a much-disliked orphaned Khaki Scout at Camp Ivanhoe, under the command of Scout Master Randy Ward (Ed Norton), but when he absconds from Camp to meet up with his romantically inclined pen pal, Suzy Bishop (Kara Hayward), who herself feels depressed and deeply disconnected from her parents and three younger brothers, a great search begins involving Scout Master Ward's entire trooper, Suzy's family, and the island's local sheriff, Captain Duffy Sharp (Bruce Willis). Sam and Suzy rendezvous in the wilderness, hike, camp, and fish, all with the goal of reach a specific, yet-to-be-revealed location, but with their families and fellow Khaki Scouts hot on their trial, the rest of the film explores the sensibilities of young love, strained parenting, and tenuous mental health, all with a tenderness that hasn't always been as prominent in Anderson's filmography. The countdown crew reflects on what this film says about Anderson's evolving tenderness, his renewed knack for exposing unfound talent, and discuss at length whether this might be Bruce Willis's last great performance.

On part 6 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay get to talk about a countdown series first: an animated film, with Wes Anderson’s 2009 stop-motion animated comedy, FANTASTIC MR. FOX. Directed by Anderson, and co-written with THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU collaborator, Noah Baumbach, and adapted from the famous Roald Dahl children’s book, FANTASTIC MR. FOX stars George Clooney as the titular Mr. Fox, who after several years removed from his life of thievery, finds himself on a spree of thefts, victimizing three local farmers - Boggis (Robin Hurlstone), Bunce (Hugo Guinness), and Bean (Michael Gambon - who begin to hunt down his family - his wife, Mrs. Fox (Meryl Streep); his son, Ash (Jason Schwartzman), and nephew, Kristofferson Silverfox (Wes’s brother, Eric Chase Anderson) - and ultimately his community in retaliation for stealing from them. Along the way, Mr. Fox must learn that his lifestyle and behavior has deeper ripples and longer-lasting consequences than just those that apply to him. Featuring several memorable cameos from the likes of Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, and several others, FANTASTIC MR. FOX is Anderson’s first endeavor into stop-motion, and the countdown crew talk all about how his filmmaking sensibilities translate to the new medium, how well the ensemble voice cast fits their roles, and whether Roald Dahl’s timeless children’s book is well-suited for Anderson’s storytelling.

Ep. 236 - Polite Society

On this week's episode, the two Scotts are reunited and find themselves across the pond in England for a review of the British-Pakistani martial arts action comedy, POLITE SOCIETY. On part 5 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay return to talk all about Wes Anderson’s 2007 family comedy-drama, THE DARJEELING LIMITED. Directed by Anderson and co-written by Anderson with now-frequent collaborator Jason Schwartzman and with first-time co-writer Roman Coppola, THE DARJEELING LIMITED stars Anderson regulars Owen Wilson and Schwartzman, alongside Adrien Brody as 3 estranged brothers: Francis (Wilson), Peter (Brody), and Jack (Schwartzman), who meet aboard a train in India, The Darjeeling Limited, for the first time in over a year since their father’s funeral. All three men are still mourning their father’s death in various ways, and having recently survived a near-fatal motorcycle accident, Francis wishes to reconcile with his brothers during a journey of spiritual self-discovery through South Asia. His motives are not entirely pure, however, as he also is covertly searching for their mother, Patricia (Anjelica Huston) whom all three brothers have not seen for many years since she abandoned them and their father for convent life. Francis’s controlling nature emerges quickly, as he plans a strict itinerary for the three of them and confiscates their passports to prevent either Peter or Jack from leaving early. As the train journeys through the Indian countryside and to various spiritual sites, tensions rise between the trio, and in order to regrow their fraternal bond and properly mourn their father’s death, Francis, Peter, and Jack will have to look past their differences and accept each other for who they are. The countdown crew give their thoughts on Anderson's fifth film, including the performances of its three leading men, the twists and turns their journey takes through India, and whether the themes of family and loss ultimately coalesce well together.

On part 4 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay review Wes Anderson's 2004 adventure comedy-drama, THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU. Directed by Anderson and co-written with Noah Baumbach in the first of several collaborations between the two, THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU stars Bill Murray in the titular role, as an eccentric oceanographer-turned-documentarian who is on a quest for revenge against a rare 10-meter-long luminescently spotted "jaguar shark" that devoured his best friend and lead diver, Esteban, on the shoot of his most recent documentary. Zissou is joined on his ship, the Belafonte, by his eclectic crew that includes Eleanor (Anjelica Huston), his estranged wife who serves as Zissou's chief strategist and financial expert; Pelé (Seu George), the vessel's safety expert who also plays the guitar and sings David Bowie songs in Portuguese; and Klaus (Willem Dafoe), a feisty German first-mate, who views Zissou and Esteban as father figures. The Belafonte and "Team Zissou" aren't in total harmony, however, as rifts begin to grow among the crew, and some new chaos is introduced with two new joiners to the crew for the latest expedition: Ned (Owen Wilson), who believes Zissou may be his father, and Jane (Cate Blanchett), a pregnant reporter who has been sent to chronicle Zissou's latest film, that both Zissou and Ned also happen to be attracted to. When the financing for Zissou's final voyage for revenge against the jaguar shark falls through, Ned offers Zissou his inheritance to fund the expedition, leading Eleanor to leave in disgust of Zissou's exploitative behaviors. The tension among the crew only grows deeper as Zissou gives more and more attention to Ned, frustrating Klaus in the process, while also competing with Ned for the affection of Jane. The wacky leftovers of Team Zissou have quite the adventure ahead of them, however, and Zissou is determined to find the jaguar shark that killed his best friend. Who knows, maybe he'll learn some life lessons along the way. The countdown crew give their thoughts on Anderson's fourth film, including its journey to cult status, its more adventurous spin on Anderson's narrative style, and the ensemble cast brought to bear.

Ep. 234 - Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.

On the third episode of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay review Wes Anderson's 2001 family comedy-drama, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS. Created in the same style as RUSHMORE - directed by Wes Anderson and co-written by Anderson and Owen Wilson - THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS is narrated by Alec Baldwin but led by Tenenbaum family patriarch, Royal (Gene Hackman), who has been separated for over 20 years from his wife, Etheline (Anjelica Huston), who has custody of their 3 children, Chas (Ben Stiller), Richie (Luke Wilson), and the adopted Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow), all savants in one subject or another in their own right and who Royal takes advantage of without giving much, if anything, in return. Now down on his luck, Royal is evicted from the hotel he had been living in, and has nowhere to go except crawling back to the house where Etheline now lives out her retirement years. There, he learns that Etheline's new boyfriend, an accountant named Henry (Danny Glover), has proposed to her, and as a result, fakes having stomach cancer to try to win back his wife's and children's affections through pity. Chas, whose wife recently died as a result of a plane crash and who has become overprotective of his two children, Ari and Uzi; Richie, who is traveling the world on a cruise ship following his most recent breakup and who professes his love of his adopted sister Margot to his not-quite friend and confidant Eli (Owen Wilson); and Margot, who is married to an older neurologist, Raleigh St. Clair (Bill Murray) and who is depressed and hiding this fact from her husband and family; are all summoned to their father's "deathbed", a ruse which of course unravels rather quickly as each member of the Tenenbaum family is deeply familiar with Royal's wiliness. Royal will have to work a lot harder to win back the favor of his somewhat-estranged family and maybe even find personal redemption along the way. The countdown crew give their thoughts on Anderson's third film, including the nuanced themes, the ensemble cast's performances, and how Anderson's filmmaking style continues to refine and evolve.
