Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's newest Countdown miniseries: the Wes Anderson Countdown. To honor one of the great still-working indie writer-director auteurs, who's next film ASTEROID CITY comes out later this year, Scott, Scott, and Jay will be watching all 10 of the American filmmakers' works to-date, from his origins with the '90s heist-comedy BOTTLE ROCKET, all the way to his latest feature, 2021's star-studded anthology drama THE FRENCH DISPATCH. Join us each week over the next 10 weeks as we progress through Anderson's full oeuvre in the buildup to ASTEROID CITY!
On Part 10 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit Wes Anderson's most recent film to-date, and discuss the anthology drama: THE FRENCH DISPATCH. Written and directed by Wes, THE FRENCH DISPATCH is set in 1975 and is imagined as an ode to bygone years of journalism (specifically The New Yorker magazine), and delivers that in the form of publishing one final issue for the French foreign bureau of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun newspaper, after its founder, Arthur Howitzer Jr. (Bill Murray), passes away unexpectedly. Howitzer wished for the bureau to cease publication after his death, but his staff put the finishing touches on the upcoming issue and publish it in his honor. The film unfurls almost magazine-like, in the form of an anthology, as it splits into 3 different short stories, preceded by an even briefer tour of the local fictional French city, Ennui-sur-Blasé and followed by Howitzer's obituary. The three central stories - The Concrete Masterpiece, Revisions to a Manifesto, and The Private Dining Room of the Police Commissioner - each are written by a different French Dispatch reporter. 'The Concrete Masterpiece' tells the story of a mentally unwell, incarcerated painter, Moses Rosenthaler (Benecio del Toro), whose nude paintings of a prison guard, Simone (Lea Seydoux), spark greed in a fellow inmate and art dealer Julien Cadazio (Adrien Brody), leading to a years-long quest to get Rosenthaler to paint new art for him to sell. 'Revisions to a Manifesto' plots the story of a French student protest-turned-revolution, led by the disaffected Zeffirelli (Timothee Chalamet), after the students' initial concerns about access to the girls' dormitory at school boil over when fellow protestor, Mitch Mitch, is conscripted into the French military. And finally, 'The Private Dining Room of the Police Commissioner', tells the daring story of the kidnapping and rescue of Gigi, the son of the Ennui police commissioner (Mathieu Amalric). Naturally, each story has much more going on beneath the surface, as each story's writer contends with the effects being so close to each events has on them, and sheds its own light on how the magazine's now-late editor-in-chief supported them in their journalistic endeavors. The countdown crew reflect on the star-studded cast, this new filmmaking format for Wes, and whether the the central 3 stories satisfactorily tie together.

On Part 9 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit Wes Anderson's second attempt at stop-motion animation: ISLE OF DOGS. Set in a fictional near-future, dystopic Japanese city called Megasaki, ISLE OF DOGS charts the journey of a young boy, Atari (Koyu Rankin), whose authoritarian uncle and legal guardian, Kenji Kobayashi (Kunichi Nomura), as authoritarian the mayor of Megasaki, has banished all dogs to 'Trash Island', a small island off the coast of Negasaki, under the pretense of a dangerous double-pandemic: canine flu and snout fever. Atari's canine companion, Spots (Liev Schreiber) is the first dog to be transported to the 'Isle of Dogs', and after several months of planning, Atari sets out to rescue him. Once Atari makes his crash landing onto the island, he meets a pack of dogs that include the stray leader, Chief (Bryan Cranston), as well as Rex (Ed Norton), King (Bob Balaban), Duke (Jeff Goldblum), and Boss (Bill Murray). Together, Atari and his newly met companions set off across Trash Island in search of Spots, and quickly learn that Atari's uncle has more dastardly plans in store, both for Megasaki and the dogs on Trash Island. The countdown crew reflect on what Wes has done to evolve his game since his first animated outing in FANTASTIC MR. FOX, who brings the most heat out of the ensemble voice cast, and whether the themes of the film resonate more deeply after a global pandemic of our own.

On Part 8 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit one of Wes Anderson's most widely acclaimed works: THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Solo written and directed by Anderson, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL is the auteur's 2014 comedy-drama and has the unique appeal of being a bit of a story within a story within a story... within a story, when a young woman visits the shrine of a renowned, unnamed author in the former nation of Zubrowka. The woman reads the author's most cherished book - The Grand Budapest Hotel - in which the author (Jude Law) recounts his vacation several decades prior to the once-grand, but now-decaying titular hotel. There, he meets the hotel's mysterious, aging owner, Zero Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham), who over dinner with the author tells his rags-to-riches story from the day he stepped foot in the hotel. Enter the film's lead, Ralph Fiennes, who stars as Monsieur Gustave H., the famed concierge to one of the most renowned resorts in all of Eastern Europe. After quickly learning of the younger Zero (Tony Revelori's) commitment, takes the youthful lobby boy under his wing. Gustave mentors him, gives him responsibility, takes care of him, but inadvertently also puts him in danger when one of Gustave's mistresses, Madame D. (Tilda Swinton), dies suddenly and leaves a valuable painting to Gustave that her villainous son, Dmitri (Adrien Brody) covets. Cue a heist, a prison break, a cross-continent chase, and plenty of hi-jinx along the way, all in Wes Anderson's now-iconic style. The countdown crew reflect on the massive ensemble cast, the film's humor, the maybe-surprising emotional heft, and whether it is indeed Wes Anderson's magnum opus to-date.

On part 7 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay revisit MOONRISE KINGDOM, Wes Anderson’s return to the coming-of-age comedy-drama. Directed by Anderson and co-written with Wes regular, Roman Coppola, MOONRISE KINGDOM tells the story of two disaffected, pre-teen, star-crossed lovers on the small New England island called New Penzance. Sam Shakusky (Jared Gilman) is a much-disliked orphaned Khaki Scout at Camp Ivanhoe, under the command of Scout Master Randy Ward (Ed Norton), but when he absconds from Camp to meet up with his romantically inclined pen pal, Suzy Bishop (Kara Hayward), who herself feels depressed and deeply disconnected from her parents and three younger brothers, a great search begins involving Scout Master Ward's entire trooper, Suzy's family, and the island's local sheriff, Captain Duffy Sharp (Bruce Willis). Sam and Suzy rendezvous in the wilderness, hike, camp, and fish, all with the goal of reach a specific, yet-to-be-revealed location, but with their families and fellow Khaki Scouts hot on their trial, the rest of the film explores the sensibilities of young love, strained parenting, and tenuous mental health, all with a tenderness that hasn't always been as prominent in Anderson's filmography. The countdown crew reflects on what this film says about Anderson's evolving tenderness, his renewed knack for exposing unfound talent, and discuss at length whether this might be Bruce Willis's last great performance.

On part 6 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay get to talk about a countdown series first: an animated film, with Wes Anderson’s 2009 stop-motion animated comedy, FANTASTIC MR. FOX. Directed by Anderson, and co-written with THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU collaborator, Noah Baumbach, and adapted from the famous Roald Dahl children’s book, FANTASTIC MR. FOX stars George Clooney as the titular Mr. Fox, who after several years removed from his life of thievery, finds himself on a spree of thefts, victimizing three local farmers - Boggis (Robin Hurlstone), Bunce (Hugo Guinness), and Bean (Michael Gambon - who begin to hunt down his family - his wife, Mrs. Fox (Meryl Streep); his son, Ash (Jason Schwartzman), and nephew, Kristofferson Silverfox (Wes’s brother, Eric Chase Anderson) - and ultimately his community in retaliation for stealing from them. Along the way, Mr. Fox must learn that his lifestyle and behavior has deeper ripples and longer-lasting consequences than just those that apply to him. Featuring several memorable cameos from the likes of Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, and several others, FANTASTIC MR. FOX is Anderson’s first endeavor into stop-motion, and the countdown crew talk all about how his filmmaking sensibilities translate to the new medium, how well the ensemble voice cast fits their roles, and whether Roald Dahl’s timeless children’s book is well-suited for Anderson’s storytelling.
